Poker Strategies - Online Poker Strategy - Hand Odds

Following are the tried and true strategies for playing poker. Some would even call them the golden rules of poker . These rules apply to all poker games. The golden rules are:

  • Don't be cheap . When playing poker you must realize that good hands are sometimes hard to come by (As you can see in the tables below). With this in mind it is a good idea to sit down at the Poker Table with a healthy bankroll. A good rule of thumb is at least 20x your minimum bet.
  • Fold if you have nothing in your hand.
  • If you have a good hand make the other players pay to see it.
  • The ultimate goals is to beat the other players not to have the highest hand . If another hand has you beat - Fold
  • If you do not draw a pair in five hands - Quit   It's not your night to be at the Poker Table!!!

Odds of being dealt a Poker Hand

Poker Hand Odds of being dealt
    Royal Flush 1 in 650, 000
    Straight Flush 1 in 72, 200
    Four of a Kind 1 in 4, 200
    Full House 1 in 700
    Flush 1 in 510
    Straight 1 in 250
    Three of a Kind 1 in 48
    Two Pair 1 in 21
    One Pair 1 in 2.4
    No Pair 1 in 2

Odds of improving a Poker Hand off the Draw

HAND any improvement 2 pair 3 of a kind Full House 4 of a kind
    Drawing three cards to a Pair 1 in 2.5 1 in 5 1 in 8 1 in 97 1 in 360
    Drawing two cards to a Pair with a kicker 1 in 3 1 in 5 1 in 12 1 in 120 1 in 1100
    Drawing two cards to a Three of a Kind 1 in 8.5 -- -- 1 in 15.5 1 in 22.5
    Drawing one card to a Three of a Kind with a kicker 1 in 11 -- -- 1 in 15 1 in 46

Odds of completing a Poker Hand drawing one card

    Drawing one card to ODDS
Four cards of a Flush 1 in 4.5
Straight open at both ends 1 in 5
Straight open at one end 1 in 11
Straight open on the inside 1 in 11
Straight Flush open at both ends 1 in 23
Straight Flush open at one end 1 in 46
Straight Flush open on the inside 1 in 46

Looking at the above tables their are some conclusions that can be made:

  • The more players there are the greater the odds for one or more players to have a high ranking hand.
  • If you do not have a pair or four cards to a straight or flush, fold immediately.
  • Yes - this does mean you will be folding a good percentage of the hands that are dealt you.
  • It is a good practice to toss the kicker because the odds of drawing the card of the same value to your kicker is slim.
  • Another thing you have to keep in mind is you should never try to build a straight or higher out of three original cards. The odds for completing such a hand is 1 in 85

You always have to remember these odds when making your betting decision. Let's say you have a four card flush. The first question that pops into your mind should be: What are my chances of completing on the draw? In this case they are 1 in 4.5. If the pot is not 4.5 times the wager you would have to make to stay in, you should fold. This basic strategy should be applied to all betting decisions.

There is alot more to playing poker than what we've outlined here, but these are the basic poker strategies that most good poker players always follow. These poker strategies should help make your time at the Poker table more profitable and enjoyable!!!
